Integrated Systems Testing
CSA/UL S1001:2025

Electratech is currently in the process of becoming certified and accredited through UL (Underwater Laboratories of Canada Inc.) to complete all your life safety integrated systems testing requirements throughout Saskatchewan, with reference to the National Building Code, National Fire Code, and the Standard for Integrated Systems Testing of Fire Protection and Life Safety Systems (CAN/ULC S1001:2025). Although not a requirement to perform Integrated Systems Testing, it sets us apart from others!

Integrated systems testing (IST) is needed to ensure that multiple interconnected safety systems (like fire alarms, sprinklers, and elevators) work together as a single unit to protect occupants during an emergency. It  is crucial because individual systems may function correctly on their own but fail to work together when a real emergency occurs, which is often a requirement for building occupancy and compliance with safety standards.

Key reasons for integrated systems testing:

  • Verifies system interoperability: It ensures that different systems communicate and function as intended when an alarm or emergency condition is triggered.

  • Ensures a cohesive response: IST confirms the correct sequence of operations, such as sprinklers activating and elevators recalling to a safe floor, to protect people and property.

  • Detects hidden flaws: It identifies potential problems that individual system testing would miss, such as how a new fire alarm panel interacts with older sprinkler systems or how emergency power systems respond to a failure.

  • Meets regulatory compliance: Modern building codes often require IST for new construction and renovations involving life safety systems, and it is necessary to obtain occupancy permits.

  • Provides peace of mind: It gives building owners and managers confidence that their life safety systems will perform reliably when needed most.

When is IST required?

  • New buildings: Before they can be occupied.

  • Renovations: After any modification or upgrade that affects the life safety systems.

  • Regular intervals: After the initial test, a re-test is typically required one year later, and then every five years thereafter
